Zenith Racing Goes On Xmas Holidays With Three Races In Four Days
4/01/2008 8:40:09 AM - Zenith Racing
Zenith Racing, led by team driver Craig Van Der Stelt, had a busy Christmas holiday period taking in three races in the space of four days. Starting on boxing night, 26th December, at Speedway City for World Series Sprintcars, the team then trekked up the freeway to Murray Bridge Speedway on 27th December for another World Series Sprintcars round before winding up back at Speedway City on 29th December for the Sprintcar Xmas Cup.

After some problems in time trials that weren’t helped by a late time trial draw Zenith Racing was outside the heat race inversion and the team packed up and headed home early. A decision was made overnight to change cars with the hard working Zenith Racing crew up at 6am the next morning to begin putting together the team’s spare Maxim chassis.

After a long day in the workshop Craig Van Der Stelt again had his work cut out after drawing the 28th time trial spot putting in a time of 13.750 seconds which was good enough for 27th position on the dry surface that left four World Series Sprintcars contract drivers outside the heat race inversion. The 27th time trial result put Craig on the front row of his two heat races which he convincingly ran away with on both occasions.
“The Zenith Racing team had worked all day and it was great to reward them with two heat race wins at World Series Sprintcars in front of such a huge crowd”, said team driver Craig Van Der Stelt. “In the first heat one of the lines on the wing slider came adrift covering me in power steering fluid but apart from that the car worked perfectly all night. At 6am this morning we started with a bare chassis and the team put in a huge effort and I want to thank them all for putting together such a great car”.
The two heat race wins put Craig into 10th position in points and a start in the B dash where he came home in 6th spot setting up a 12th place A main starting position. In the A Main Craig held his starting spot until in site of the white flag dropping one spot at the finish of the 35 lap final recording a 13th place finish.
“After such a long day the plan was to try and hold my spot and get through the entire 35 laps unscathed as the last thing we needed was more work before the Xmas Cup”, said Craig. “We held on for nearly the entire race put lost a spot near the end. All in all we were pleased with the result and were looking forward to getting some more laps in a few days time”.

Back to Speedway City for the Sprintcar Xmas Cup with a small field of 410ci Sprintcars on hand to see who could take away the local South Australian honours. Two mixed heat race results saw Craig finish 8th in his first heat and then taking a win in the second round of heats. After starting from 5th in the final Craig was able to move forward claiming the final podium spot with a 3rd place finish.
